Carrera was founded in 1956 in Austria by Wilhelm Anger, as the sports-eyewear maker was inspired by the 'Carrera Panamericana' auto race at that particular time.
In 1964, Wilhelm Anger developed and patented the ‘Optyl’ material, which is a heat-hardened plastic weighing 20% less than acetate resulting in a reduction of allergic reactions and improved fit through a memory effect that provided permanent elasticity and dimensional stability.
In 1974, the company was renamed 'Carrera International', and established a headquarters in Traun, Austria. From there on they went to partner up with automobile designer Ferdinand Alexander, to develop the sunglasses collection 'Porsche Design by Carrera'.
The brand has not only taken over the music industry but also the acting industry. Hollywood is full of celebrities that prefer Carrera as their favorite vintage sunglass brand. Gwen Stefani, Brad Pitt, Rick Ross, Johnny Depp and many more are often spotted with their Carrera eyejewels. Carrera sunglasses also have been featured in many movies, such as Al Pacino in 'Scarface', Don Johnson in "Miami Vice" or Sylvester Stallone in 'Cobra' and so on.
Only and exclusively to honor Carrera we have created 2 sections within our vintage sunglasses shop where you will only find the true vintage collection by Wilhelm Anger from 1956-1996 before the brand got sold to Safilo.
